Go ye out into the world of PHP freeware and look for something called a CAPTCHA. That is the little box with the wierd background and the distorted letters that (theoretically) only a human can read. When you do, you will find some authors that are offering other ideas that are a little more advanced, since some of the bad guys are using Optical Character Recognition software to break the old fashioned CAPTCHAs.
